Woolways Retreat: Hurricane Island, Maine

The Vision

Have you ever wanted to escape to a beautiful Maine island with just your knitting, a good book, and the sound of the sea to soothe your soul and awaken your creative spirit? Have you ever looked across the landscape of a long, cold winter and imagined the sparkling summer waters of Penobscot Bay, with its rocky outcroppings, pointed firs, clear skies and ancient tides?

Have you ever longed to awaken in a wee cabin, step out to greet the dawn of a northeastern morning, taking in the sharp, sweet smell of the tide as you walk down to a perfectly prepared, and locally sourced breakfast before heading out to knit in the sun on a wild rocky beach?

If this sounds like your kind of heaven, please join us for our first Woolways Retreat on Hurricane Island, Maine.

The Place

For decades an Outward Bound educational center, the Hurricane Island Foundation now operates as a well respected, and vibrant resource for science education. The focus is on place based research, and groups and individuals of all ages are welcome. The heart of this place is about discovery, about looking and seeing, and asking questions. What better place to host a retreat for knitters, spinners, felters and all manner of fiber enthusiast?

The People

In the spirit of learning, and discovery, One Lupine/Maine Yarn & Fiber Supply is proud to offer you a rare experience. Kirsten Kapur,  NYC based knitwear designer, and author, will be joining us for this retreat. As guest teacher, and artist in residence, Kirsten will be sharing her expertise and art with you. Whether you are in pursuit of new techniques, want to hone your skills, or simply wish to learn at the needles of a master, this time with Kirsten will be invaluable. See bio below for more information about Kirsten.

As if that was not enough, we will also be joined by Jackie Ottino Graf of Forage Color. Jackie, a Maine resident, internationally known teacher, and long time friend, is a master dyer with unparalleled expertise in natural dye techniques. She will be offering you her outdoor, saltwater workshop using foraged ingredients.

Jodi Clayton, owner and founder of One Lupine/Maine Yarn & Fiber Supply, will be offering mini sessions on an array of knitting techniques. Jodi will also lead  round-table discussions about sheep breeds, yarn selection, fleece grading and sorting, and how to select the best fiber for your project.

Kirsten Kapur

Kirsten Kapur is a New York City based designer who grew up in a family of knitters, sewers and crafters. It was only natural that she would pursue a career as an apparel and textile designer in the ready-to-wear industry, where she honed her skills in garment construction and surface design. Years later, this knowledge proved invaluable when she began to experiment with the interplay between colors and textures in her original knitwear designes and patterns. Kirsten's independently published designes can be found online on Ravelry and her website www.kirstenkapurdesigns.com

Kirsten's designs have been published in many books and magazines. Her most recent book is, Drop Dead Easy Knits, which she co-authored with Gale Zucker and Mary Lou Egan. She is also the author of Kirsten Kapur Shawl Book One.

Peace Fleece Sweater Retrospective & Closing Celebration

Peace Fleece Sweater Retrospective & Closing Celebration

The Peace Fleece Sweater Retrospective will run through the first week of December. Among the beautiful sweaters, there are also photographs generously donated by the Hagertys, chronicling their fiber journey. They will be joining us for the closing of the show to tell us their story.

The Peace Fleece offices are in a barn on a sheep and horse farm in the small, rural town of Porter in the foothills of southwestern Maine. Peter Hagerty and his wife Marty Tracy started buying wool from the Soviet Union back in 1985 in hopes that through trade they could help diffuse the threat of nuclear war. Since then Peter has journeyed through eastern Europe, central Asia and the Middle East in search of farmers and shepherds who are willing to set aside historic enmities in exchange for opportunities leading to mutual understanding and economic interdependence.
