Woolways Retreat: Hurricane Island, Maine

The Vision

Have you ever wanted to escape to a beautiful Maine island with just your knitting, a good book, and the sound of the sea to soothe your soul and awaken your creative spirit? Have you ever looked across the landscape of a long, cold winter and imagined the sparkling summer waters of Penobscot Bay, with its rocky outcroppings, pointed firs, clear skies and ancient tides?

Have you ever longed to awaken in a wee cabin, step out to greet the dawn of a northeastern morning, taking in the sharp, sweet smell of the tide as you walk down to a perfectly prepared, and locally sourced breakfast before heading out to knit in the sun on a wild rocky beach?

If this sounds like your kind of heaven, please join us for our first Woolways Retreat on Hurricane Island, Maine.

The Place

For decades an Outward Bound educational center, the Hurricane Island Foundation now operates as a well respected, and vibrant resource for science education. The focus is on place based research, and groups and individuals of all ages are welcome. The heart of this place is about discovery, about looking and seeing, and asking questions. What better place to host a retreat for knitters, spinners, felters and all manner of fiber enthusiast?

The People

In the spirit of learning, and discovery, One Lupine/Maine Yarn & Fiber Supply is proud to offer you a rare experience. Kirsten Kapur,  NYC based knitwear designer, and author, will be joining us for this retreat. As guest teacher, and artist in residence, Kirsten will be sharing her expertise and art with you. Jodi Clayton, owner and founder of One Lupine/Maine Yarn & Fiber Supply, will be offering mini sessions on an array of knitting techniques. Kirsten Kapur

Kirsten Kapur is a New York City based designer who grew up in a family of knitters, sewers and crafters. It was only natural that she would pursue a career as an apparel and textile designer in the ready-to-wear industry, where she honed her skills in garment construction and surface design. Years later, this knowledge proved invaluable when she began to experiment with the interplay between colors and textures in her original knitwear designes and patterns. Kirsten's independently published designes can be found online on Ravelry and her website www.kirstenkapurdesigns.com

Kirsten's designs have been published in many books and magazines. Her most recent book is, Drop Dead Easy Knits, which she co-authored with Gale Zucker and Mary Lou Egan. She is also the author of Kirsten Kapur Shawl Book One.

Jackie Retreat shot.jpg

Jackie Ottino Graf, of Forage Color, will be gracing  us with her wonderful energy and outstanding skills as a Master  Natural Dyer. Jackie will lead a workshop in which you will foraging for plants and other island treasures, which you will use to dye your own yarn. The focus will be on using place, and the natural world to create dyepot art. Jackie is a sought after teacher and your time with her will be a rare and wonderful treat.

Tour de Fleece 2018

IMG_0991.JPG

Join us in the annual Tour de Fleece spin-along during the Tour de France. They spin, we spin. A real spinning-themed spin-along! Spin every day the Tour rides, if possible. Prizes will be awarded for Most Improved, Most Yardage, and Widest array of breeds and techniquesWIPs are welcome, but only yarn clearly spun during 2018 Tour de Fleece will be eligible for prizes. Please fill out a spinning plan to enter.

Spin something challenging on the challenge days (usually the toughest high mountain stage: this year, the first one is Stage 10, on Tuesday July 17, when the riders will take the first mountain stage of the race – includes a section of dirt road on the Plateau des Glières. It is 100km from the finish but comes after a 6km climb at 11%. The second is Stage 17, on Wednesday, July 25th, when they will ride to the summit of the Col de Portet which is only 65km long but half of the stage is uphill. It is the shortest road stage of the 2018 Tour but could be one of the hardest.

Spin as much Maine Yarn & Fiber Supply fiber as possible. We encourage you to try some of the rare breeds Maine Yarn & Fiber Supply has available as well some of the various fiber preps available (combed top, roving, batts, etc). Maine Yarn & Fiber Supply will be offering deals during the Tour de Fleece:

15% off spinning wheels!

Ladybug, Flat Iron, Sidekick in stock.

15% off prepaid orders from Schacht and Louet.

Fiber Feature of the Week:

July 7-14: 20% off all BFL braids, roving, and batts (blends excluded)

July 16-21: 20% off Maine-raised fleece

July 23-29: 20% off all batts and locks

If you are not a spinner but would still like to participate you may knit, crochet, weave, etc. along with us! And don’t forget you don’t have to be local to participate! Just post your photos to each days thread.

Wear yellow on Sunday, July 29th to announce victory. Why not wear yellow on any day you feel particularly successful? Yellow is the color of the race leader in the Tour - but here we are all race leaders. Other colors if desired: Green (sprinter - think FAST), Polka-dot (climber - as in uphill), and white (rookie).

Days of rest are Monday, July 16th and Monday, July 23rd, just like the Tour de France.

And our GOAL:

Challenge Yourself.

Spin.

Have fun.

Peace Fleece Sweater Retrospective & Closing Celebration

The Peace Fleece Sweater Retrospective will run through the first week of December. Among the beautiful sweaters, there are also photographs generously donated by the Hagertys, chronicling their fiber journey. They will be joining us for the closing of the show to tell us their story.

The Peace Fleece offices are in a barn on a sheep and horse farm in the small, rural town of Porter in the foothills of southwestern Maine. Peter Hagerty and his wife Marty Tracy started buying wool from the Soviet Union back in 1985 in hopes that through trade they could help diffuse the threat of nuclear war. Since then Peter has journeyed through eastern Europe, central Asia and the Middle East in search of farmers and shepherds who are willing to set aside historic enmities in exchange for opportunities leading to mutual understanding and economic interdependence.
